Improv Blocks

I finished my Project Improv blocks this afternoon. This project was so much fun that I made two blocks. I will be sending them off this week. I was not jumping up and down about red and aqua to begin with. I had plenty of red but not much aqua. I was "forced" to visit the fabric store to find a couple more aquas. I have to say that aqua is not my favorite shade of green but it does blend well with other colors. I find that thinking about what you are going to do is very stimulating for my brain. I enjoy deciding what to do. One of the things that kept me from quilting for years is the thought of doing dozens of blocks the same way. I need something more interesting to occupy my mind.

This one didn't turn out exactly like I thought it would but I am satisfied with it.

While I was searching for some more aquas I found the latest issue of Quiltmaker magazine with Tonya's article in it. I love making houses and it is a great tutorial if you are interesting in liberated quilting.

And yes we are very depressed over the Tarheels losing to Maryland in overtime on Saturday. Our son came over to watch the game with us and we were all very sad to see our fellas lose. Lets hope they realize they need to play defense. Just a few weeks until March Madness! Stanley is obviously upset too!

Connections

I just had to share this picture. This is a picture of my grandmother and her 10 brothers and sisters. They all had names that started with a "Z".

My grandmother is in the middle row on the far left. Her name was Zenobia. The story is that my great grandmother, Jutry, named her first child a daughter, Zylphia, after her sister. She named her second child, another daughter, Zula, after a friend. Her third child was a son and he was named Zaddock after her brother. Since she had three children with Z names she was encouraged to give the rest of her children Z names which she did. My grandmother, Zenovia Theresa, was born on July 3, 1897 and died in 1982 just a couple of weeks before my daughter was born. She was a great quilter and very liberated for her time. I have talked about her before. I have a few quilts that she made that I will take pictures of and post later but I wanted to share this with you.

I am in sort of a quilting funk lately. I have some projects started so I have plenty to work on. I need to take some time and confine myself to my sewing room until I get something done. With a new grandson and lots of basketball games there are definitely some distractions. My husband and I are also reading Nelson DeMille books. They are not the kind of books I usually read but it is fun for us to read the same books.

2 Woo-Hoos

Tonight is the Dook-Carolina game and we hope that the Carolina team that shows up is the great one. This is one of the greatest rivalry's in the history of basketball dating back to January, 1920. In my family we all will be pulling for the University of North Carolina our states flagship university. Most of the students that attend Duke are not even from North Carolina. These two schools are also less than 10 miles apart. Most of the players are friends off the court but definitely not on the court. We still remember when Gerald Henderson hit Tyler Hasbrough in the face!! And Carolina leads the series 128-97!

The second Woo-Hoo is if you haven't seen a movie in a long time you should think about seeing Slum Dog Millionaire. My daughter and I went to the movie Sunday night. I had not been in a long time. I just don't think about going. This is a wonderful movie. Some violence but not violence purely for the sake of violence. In other words, the good guy wins.

Pull hard for the Heels tonight!!

Projects

I thought I was going to have so much time today but with going to the Library's used book sale, watching my favorite soap, (yes I am addicted) and walking the dogs I didn't get much done. I have been working on a few squares using Jan Mullen fabric I bought off Ebay last winter. I really like her designs. I haven't decided what I am going to do with these square. I just found out my neighbor is pregnant with her first child and I might use it for her baby quilt. They are such a nice young couple. They aren't finding out if the baby is going to be a boy or a girl and this would work for either.

Too Bright?

Do I need sashing? Maybe a pale yellow or green?

I started on my Project Improv square. I got red/aqua. At first I was a little put off by the combination but I have come to really like it. I need to add more to it but at least this is a start. You should see what some of the others are doing. I am so intimidated!!

We have a busy weekend ahead. Our daughter is coming home to meet her new nephew and of course I will have to do some baby rocking!! The Tarheels play Virginia tomorrow. We are all pumped because Duke lost! The only thing better than a Tarheel win is a Duke loss.

Welcome to the world

Our second grandson was delivered safely yesterday at 8:09 am. He weighted 7 pounds 5 ounces. He and his mother are doing great as is his father and his big brother. We are all thrilled with the new addition to our family.

Notice he was born on Groundhogs Day. His mother was born in Punxsutawney! We all suggested they call him Phil but they decided against that. We are all hoping that things will go as smoothly as they have so far. Big brother and little brother will have some adjusting to do but we will handle it.
